Contemporary Farmhouse Garden Design

This garden had been ideal for the clients three girls to play when young, with an old playhouse, tree house, raised patio and rabbit hutch. The trees and planting had become a jungle of indistinct greenery with no flowering colour.  With the girls growing up fast, the garden wasn't being used to it's full advantage by the family. The very busy clients contacted Bel to help transform the overgrown patch into a contemporary country style garden with just enough traditional features to link to the old farmhouse property.

The plot slopes from across the site and previous owners had installed a raised patio area which was now becoming unstable and swallowed up a third of the garden, leaving little space for lawn, planting and very limited options for seating / dining.  The patio and overgrown planting also hid several 'garden features' from previous owners, discovered when the site was being cleared.

The clients were open to suggestions and Bel felt a full clearance of the site would open up the plot to allow for the wished for dining area, lounge area, posh rabbit hutch and sufficient lawn for their Bell tent.  A retaining wall would be required to compensate for the raised car park along the side of the garden and Bel suggested incorporating a raised planter to green up the expense of fencing and soften the hard landscaping. The raised bed would be sun drenched and offer room for scented plants and herbs. A simple set of steps allowing access to the garden were incorporated further from the house than the originals to allow for a generous dining area and room for an outdoor kitchen by the house.

The new lounge area designed with room for the requested outdoor sofa would be set away from the house and be covered by a sail cloth pergola to offer shade in the summer months. The posh Rabbit was tucked away against the raised planter with easy access for the girls whilst they care for the bunnies. The lawn, with room for the Bell tent curves around the dining area and is defined by curved beds filled with scented Lavender.

With Designs completed in December 2021 (see 3D visuals above) work started to clear and landscape the site in mid Spring and what a transformation!  Clearing the site just showed how much of the garden had previously been lost to overgrown planting. Planting up the new beds and borders happened on a rather rainy day in May and finished off the garden with splashes of colour and greenery which will fill out to clothe the fencing shortly.

Our clients are really please with the design and transformation…

"Absolutely delighted with our new garden. Bel’s design carefully incorporated all of our wish list and much much more.
Receiving the designs far exceeding our expectations and her subsequent coordination with her recommended landscapers made the project go without a hitch allowing us to work full time throughout, returning home to a little more transformation each day!
Her planting scheme was the cherry on the top. It's beautiful and we couldn't be happier with it. Eight weeks post planting the garden is thriving and we're really enjoying pottering around tending to it as per Bel's comprehensive maintenance instructions.
We couldn't be more delighted - thank you."
