Family Entertaining Garden Design

Having just moved to the Country, the owners of this new build property were looking to create a new place to call home. With a generous sized space for a new build property, there was scope to transform the plot from the lawned blank canvas to a lovely place to enjoy with the family.

The house faces due South, bathing the property in sunshine. However the rear fence and hedge behind cast shade over the rear half of the garden. The clients were keen to create a space which they could use year-round so a covered-seating area was a must. Further seating opportunities plus a quite spot for a hanging pod chair were required.  Being an L shaped plot with a space tucked away behind the garage, it made sense to design the area to included a seating area, surrounded by calming planting.

With several features required, they needed to connect up to the rear of the house, the garage and the side passage. To allow for this, Bel designed a curved patio to the rear of the house which linked to the secluded seating area and the covered seating area in the far right corner.  As the plot sloped from the rear right to the house, terracing using sleepers was required, which allowed the covered area to be raised, providing elevated views of the garden.  Incorporating raised beds into the terraced area and along the right boundary allowed Bel to included a herb bed, requested by the client which would benefit from the sunny position and free draining conditions.

Setting the paving on a 55 degree angle to the house, allowed for a horseshoe shaped lawn with the covered seating area raised to the far end, creating a Pavilion feel. Designing at an angle to the property also gives a sense of more space as the main view is across the longest axis of the garden.

The clients were keen to incorporate a Mediterranean feel to the garden, which can be tricky in the rural East Midlands as many plants associated with the Med are not fully hardy here. Where possible, Lavender, Olives, Oregano and Thyme were used in the scheme and plants with  blue, soft yellow and silver colouring  were incorporated to give the feel of a hotter climate.

Completed in December 2021, this garden is filling out well and is loved by the clients....

Our clients are really please with the design and transformation…
