Curvaceous Garden Design

Following on from a house renovation, the garden was the final project to transform this property.  A traditional family garden, the space had been used by the clients whilst their children grew up and had become tiered and out dated. The site sloped gently towards the house and contained several mature trees and a conifer hedge which the clients were keen to retain for privacy from neighboring properties.

The clients were keen to create a garden with clear zones to make the most of the substantial space. A greenhouse with a few raised beds was key as was a relaxing seating area to enjoy the evening sunshine. Keen gardeners the clients wanted to create a year-round display of colourful plants with extensive planting beds. The new shed positioned in the far corner of the garden required a dry pathway for easy access.

In order to tick all of the clients boxes, Bel developed a design plan which would create zones within the garden, all wrapping around a central circular lawn. A clay paver pathway would lead from the patio to the shed, via the new pergola covered seating area. The clay pavers would also be used to edge the lawn and blend into further seating areas and pathways to allow access across the garden. The existing patio and courtyard areas where incorporated into the design, with minor changes made to the patio and pathways to improve the shape and ease of use.

Rather than designing an expensive terracing option for the sloping site, Bel chose to create a level lawn, surrounded by planting beds which sloped from the boundaries to the lawn and down to the patio, creating an amphitheater of planting when viewed from the house. Subtle terracing using timber sleepers created a patio area and kitchen garden space for the cedar greenhouse and raised beds.

Landscaped during the summer of 2020, the extensive planting beds have been planted with a rich palette of colourful shrubs, perennials and grasses and shade tolerant planting for the rear boundary border, all providing year-round colour and interest.  With the project complete, this garden will mature over the next few years and develop into a beautiful country style garden for the clients to enjoy.
