Long Narrow Garden Design

This long narrow garden in Shepshed, Leicestershire, belongs to Bel!  The adjoining garden to an Edwardian house, Bel has developed the space to compliment the fine features of this Arts and Crafts property. Flanked by neatly clipped Privet hedges, the garden has a formal layout with the abundant planting you would expect from a Plantswoman and garden designer.  New landscaping was installed in 2018 and there will be further paved areas and pathways in the next few years.

Sandstone paving supplied by Ced Stone in shades of 'green' and 'beige' combined beautifully to give a traditional look with a modern twist. The feature sun terrace spans the width of the south facing garden with 'Arts and Crafts' inspired decorative benches positioned to catch the early morning and evening sunshine.

To create rooms within the garden, Bel sectioned off areas using hedges and living walls, each area defined by areas of sandstone setts laid within the pathways in a contrasting colour positioned at the transition points between each area.  A large family sized patio was installed with wrap - around planting, a new lawn laid with sandstone sett edging along with the sun terrace created.  Find out more about the Garden Design Process.

A beautiful bespoke oak gate was commissioned by Bel from her contact Chris Lucas, to separate the kitchen garden from the rest of the space. Not wishing to plant large trees in the garden, Bel has trained espalier and fan shaped fruit trees supported by bespoke frames supplied by Harrod Horticultural, which act as living walls between the garden rooms.

A new cedar greenhouse was installed in 2018 supplied by Woodpecker Joinery  providing a beautiful and functional feature within the garden.

Having been involved in the horticultural world for 20 years, Bel has amassed a huge collection of garden plants which she combines in her abundant planted borders, providing colour and interest throughout the seasons. Find out more about the Planting Design Process.

The garden is still evolving and will see further development and landscaping over the next couple of years once the property is extended.  See more of Bel's own garden on Instagram belgrierson_gardendesign and Facebook @belgriersondesign
